Instructions

In the note fields, the symbol L/l is special and indicates that the given note is played with the left (or nondominant) hand. Write it directly after the note value with no space, for example 4l. This later turns green in the notation.

To indicate a chord, enter the note numbers in the same input field, separated by spaces, for example 3 4l 6l.

For a ghost note, enter a dot (.)

Tempo is implemented following the traditional sheet-music convention, meaning that tempo is BPM of whatever the time signature says the beat is. A 4/8 piece at tempo 120 means 120 eighth notes per minute - each eighth-note beat takes 60/120 = 0.5s, the same real-time duration a quarter-note beat would take in 4/4 at the same tempo. In practical terms this means that to achieve the same audible tempo for 4/8 you need to double the tempo compared to 4/4.

The button adds a new part at the end of the composition, or a new row below the current one. The button copies the given part and adds it at the end of the composition, or copies the current row and adds it at the end of the part. The button deletes.

On a phone, it's better to turn the screen to landscape for a better view of the input form.

If you want to change the order of already-created parts, copy the parts one by one in the order you want them, so they appear at the end of the document in the desired order. Then delete the now-redundant original parts.

The "Save as public" button saves the notation so it's later visible to everyone in the list of public notations. The administrator of the site retains the right to moderate public notations (i.e. remove obvious junk, tests, broken notations, etc.). The "Save as private" button saves the notation so it's visible only to you and nobody else. Your private notations are listed on the "My notations" page in your profile.

If you edit a notation you've already saved without changing its name or visibility (public/private), saving overwrites the same file. If you change the name or visibility, a new separate file is created and the old one is left unchanged.

If you edit somebody else's notation your version is forked from the original and saved as a separate notation that you own. The original remains untouched.

The symbols suggested in the Legend are those used on this site by default, you are however free to use your own.

Have fun!
